Why does ChatGPT sound robotic, and how do I fix it?
Most of what people call ChatGPT's robotic voice comes from defaults you can change. There is a setting for its overall style and tone, a box for standing instructions, and a memory that can carry old preferences forward. Change those, then test the result with one prompt.
Why it sounds that way
ChatGPT's Default style is meant to be clear and neutral for everyone. For a lot of people that comes across as padded or overly upbeat: a compliment before the answer, a recap after it, and more hedging than the question needs.
It also follows what it has been told before. Older custom instructions or saved memories can keep a tone in place long after you stopped wanting it.
Step 1: choose a plainer base style
On the web, select your profile icon, choose Personalization, and use the dropdown next to Base style and tone. On iPhone and Android, open Settings, go to Personalization and use Base style and tone. The options are Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient and Cynical. OpenAI describes Efficient as concise and plain, and Candid as direct and encouraging. Either is a good first try if you want fewer extra words. The change applies across your chats.
That's the first step. The full fix, with three custom instruction lines to paste and a one-prompt test, is in The Tone Fix ($7), linked below.
