Quick Fixes

How do I stop ChatGPT agreeing with everything I say?

Ask for disagreement on purpose. Pick a more direct base style, add a standing instruction to point out problems, and phrase your questions so agreeing isn't the easy answer.

Why it happens

ChatGPT tries to be helpful and encouraging, and the way a question is asked shapes the answer. "This is a good plan, right?" invites a yes. A request with no clear ask for criticism often gets support rather than scrutiny.

Choose a more direct base style

On the web, select your profile icon, choose Personalization, and use the dropdown next to Base style and tone. On iPhone and Android, open Settings, go to Personalization and use Base style and tone. OpenAI describes Candid as direct and encouraging, with honest feedback, clear callouts of risks, gaps and trade-offs, and less small talk. That is the closest built-in match.

Add a standing instruction

On the web or desktop app, open Settings, select Personalization, make sure Enable customization is on, and type into the Custom Instructions field. On iPhone and Android, OpenAI's help page lists the same steps under Settings, then Customize ChatGPT. For example:

Ask questions that don't lead

When a chat starts agreeing again

Say so directly: "Stop agreeing by default. Tell me what's weak here." If a long chat keeps sliding back, start a new one. Also check Settings, then Personalization, then Memory, in case a saved preference asks for encouragement over honesty.

Keep your own judgment

Disagreement isn't automatically right either. Treat pushback as a list of things to check, not a verdict, and ask for the reasoning behind any point you aren't sure about.
