How do I set up ChatGPT for the first time?

Spend a few minutes on four settings, then use ChatGPT on one real problem. The settings are custom instructions, base style and tone, memory, and data controls. All of them can be changed later.

1. Start with one real problem

Pick something you actually need this week: an email you've been putting off, a decision, a plan. Setting up around a real task tells you quickly what to change. Exploring every feature first usually doesn't.

2. Tell it about you, once

On the web or desktop app, open Settings, select Personalization, make sure Enable customization is on, and type into the Custom Instructions field. On iPhone and Android, OpenAI's help page lists the same steps under Settings, then Customize ChatGPT. Write two or three lines about what you do and how you like answers, for example "Keep answers short and use plain words." Free and Go plans can save up to 1,500 characters of custom instructions. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans can save up to 5,000.

3. Choose a base style

On the web, select your profile icon, choose Personalization, and use the dropdown next to Base style and tone. On iPhone and Android, open Settings, go to Personalization and use Base style and tone. Default is clear and neutral. Efficient is concise and plain. Candid is direct. You can switch at any time, and the change applies across your chats.

4. Decide how memory should work

Open Settings, then Personalization, then Memory. With memory on, ChatGPT can use relevant details from past chats and saved memories so you repeat yourself less. You can review what it remembers, correct it or delete it. For a conversation you don't want remembered, use a temporary chat. Temporary chats don't create or update memories.

5. Check data controls

For personal accounts, OpenAI may use chats to improve its models when the setting Improve the model for everyone is on. You can turn it off in Data controls. OpenAI says it doesn't train on Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace content by default.

6. Have the real conversation

Go back to your problem. Give some background, say what a good result looks like, and ask. Then follow up: ask it to shorten, to explain a step, or to try another angle. Correct it when it gets something wrong. That back and forth is where most of the value is.

7. Adjust one thing

After a few chats, change one setting based on what bothered you, for example answers that run too long. Small changes are easier to judge than a full rewrite.
